DESCRIPTION

Labyrinthitis (LAB-uh-rin-THIE-tis) is an inflammation of the inner ear canal that helps you control your balance. Labyrinthitis is not a serious illness and produces no long-term problems. With treatment, the problem should clear up in 1 to 6 weeks.

CAUSES
|
|
Labyrinthitis is usually caused by a viral infection. Other causes include bacterial infection, head injury, allergies, and certain medicines. Sometimes no cause can be found.

SYMPTOMS
|
|
The signature symptom is dizziness (vertigo) that gets worse when you move your head. You may have a spinning sensation, feel nauseated, hear ringing in your ears, or suffer hearing loss. You may not be able to control the movement of your eyes, and your balance may be affected.

CARE
|
|
Resting quietly may help. For some infections, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics. For stubborn cases, surgery may be needed.
