DESCRIPTION
Cervicitis (sir-vi-SIGH-tis) is swelling and irritation of the cervix (the bottom part of the uterus). It is a common female problem, and is usually not serious. Treatment depends on the cause.
CAUSES
Often the cause of cervicitis is an infection acquired while having sex. An IUD (intrauterine device) or a forgotten tampon is sometimes at fault. Chemicals in douches also can cause the problem.

SYMPTOMS
Yellow discharge from the vagina that may or may not have a bad smell is frequently a symptom. Others include bleeding, itching, pain during sex, or a burning feeling when you urinate. You may have belly or lower back pain.

CARE
If the cause is an infection, the doctor will prescribe antibiotic medicine to eliminate the germs. Your partner(s) may also need to be treated.
